Carol is a medically qualified epidemiologist and public health academic who pioneered dementia research in populations.

As Professor of Public Health Medicine at Cambridge University (2001-2024), now Professor Emeritus, she led the groundbreaking Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies since 1989. This multidisciplinary, multicentre longitudinal research revealed that dementia can occur without expected brain pathology changes and that such changes don’t inevitably lead to dementia. Crucially, her work demonstrated that age-adjusted dementia rates have declined over 30 years, informing national policy. Her innovative work brought biological research to population studies, including establishing brain banks from community cohorts.

A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and among the world’s most cited scholars, Carol has held numerous leadership positions including NIHR Senior Investigator and co-chair of the Alzheimer’s Society Research Strategy Council. She received a CBE for services to public health medicine in 2017.

with Professor Gary E. Fraser, Loma Linda University

Hosted by Rohini Bajekal, Nutritionist & Board Member of Plant-Based Health Professionals UK
(CPD Accredited by the CPD Certification Service for 1 CPD hour and CME accredited for the LM MOC)

Participants should become better informed about the mortality and health advantages of plant-based diets. Some recently published analyses indicate important areas that deserve more research, particularly regarding neurologic mortality in the very elderly. This knowledge should enable more informed dietary choices that can result in healthier aging.

What will I learn from this webinar?

Gain better understanding of methodological challenges in nutritional epidemiology and the appropriate interpretation of results.

Appreciate the level of evidence favouring health effects of plant-based dietary patterns, and that there are some differences in outcomes between those patterns.

To note that dietary effects on health may be non-linear, and may also differ according to age and gender.
