Epidemiology and our understanding of dementia in ageing societies
with Carol Brayne, Professor Emerita Public Health Medicine, University of Cambridge
Hosted by Rohini Bajekal, Nutritionist & Webinar Lead at Plant-Based Health Professionals UK
(CPD Accredited by the CPD Certification Service for 1 CPD hour and CME accredited for the LM MOC)
What will I learn from this webinar?
The talk will aim to give an overview of the types of evidence that have led to our understanding of risk and protection across the lifecourse of our brain health, including dementia syndrome.
- How epidemiological evidence relating to brain health and dementia is generated
- How epidemiological evidence is synthesised to provide knowledge for policy
- Critical appraisal skills for assumed ‘facts’ in the world of dementia
About the speaker
Carol is a medically qualified epidemiologist and public health academic who pioneered dementia research in populations.
As Professor of Public Health Medicine at Cambridge University (2001-2024), now Professor Emeritus, she led the groundbreaking Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies since 1989. This multidisciplinary, multicentre longitudinal research revealed that dementia can occur without expected brain pathology changes and that such changes don’t inevitably lead to dementia. Crucially, her work demonstrated that age-adjusted dementia rates have declined over 30 years, informing national policy. Her innovative work brought biological research to population studies, including establishing brain banks from community cohorts.
A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and among the world’s most cited scholars, Carol has held numerous leadership positions including NIHR Senior Investigator and co-chair of the Alzheimer’s Society Research Strategy Council. She received a CBE for services to public health medicine in 2017.
