Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Vision Statement

At Plant-Based Health Professionals UK (PBHP UK), our mission is to make education on plant-based nutrition available and accessible to everyone who requires it. As health professionals, we see firsthand the widespread effects of systemic discrimination and racism within our society, reflected in the health disparities experienced by minority ethnic groups.

In order to reach a wider audience and achieve our mission, we understand the importance of being open to a diverse voice and perspective, hence our commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive organisation for team members and the wider membership. This will require identifying and eliminating barriers that prevent individuals or groups from fully participating based on the presence or lack of certain advantages and that our programmes are inclusive, impartial and fair. We recognise that these principles are key to supporting our team and members, to ensuring they feel a sense of belonging, that they are able to maintain purpose and passion for the work such that they are able to make valuable contributions to the best of their ability.

For our team members, PBHP UK is committed to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment such that team members feel safe, respected and valued in order to fulfil their full potential. We strive to create a team that represents diverse communities and our diverse membership so we can serve them better. This will be key to building a strong and sustainable organisation that can lead UK and global citizens to adopt a culturally appropriate plant-based diet for health, planet and non-human animals.

For our members, PBHP UK strives to be a welcoming and inclusive organisation so that members feel proud to support and share our work and are able to gain valuable knowledge and support from the organisation. To this end, PBHP UK will actively seek out diverse ideas, unique perspectives and viewpoints, which will ultimately strengthen our work.

PBHP UK will not differentially treat anyone on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including skin colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin), religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation, genetic information or any other protected characteristic. PBHP UK will not tolerate harassment in the form of physical, verbal, and non-verbal behaviours, and that which results in a hostile environment.

PBHP UK acknowledges that without this active focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, we will not be able to deliver on our mission of creating a kinder, more compassionate world. The leadership team aims to regularly review our programmes and ensure that diversity, equity and inclusivity principles are central to all programmes. This includes our communications work, educational resources, political outreach and hiring practices.

Our success at doing this will be reviewed on a regular basis through team meetings and on an annual basis through the members annual general meeting. The leadership team expects to be held accountable by all its relevant stakeholders: staff, volunteers, members and the wider public.
