Improving Access to Lifestyle Medicine for People with Learning Disabilities

with Jodie Winkler, Learning Disability Nurse

Hosted by Rohini Bajekal, Nutritionist & Board Member of Plant-Based Health Professionals UK
(CPD Accredited with 1 CPD Hour from the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine and CME accredited for the LM MOC)

People with Learning Disabilities are at greater risk of poorer health outcomes than the general population. This is due to various factors such as: communication difficulties, poor health literacy, health inequalities, comorbidities, mental health challenges and lack of training for healthcare workers.

Additionally, these individuals are more likely to experience challenges when accessing Lifestyle Medicine. This presentation will discuss health inequalities that people with Learning Disabilities experience; explore the barriers this population face when accessing Lifestyle Medicine and make recommendations on how to overcome these barriers in order to improve health and wellbeing outcomes.

What will I learn from this webinar?

  • Understand what is meant by the term Learning Disability and the importance of using the correct terminology
  • Gain a better awareness of the health inequalities and social determinants of health people with learning disabilities experience
  • Understand the barriers people with learning disabilities face when accessing the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine – with a focus on ‘healthy eating’
  • Provide practitioners with examples of reasonable adjustments and advice on how to reduce health inequalities and improve health outcomes for people with learning disabilities
