Oats are an ancient cereal grain with an impressive range of health benefits. Oat milks have become more and more popular in recent years. This is an easy recipe to make straight out of your kitchen!

Ingredients

  • 30g jumbo or rolled oats, soaked in 120ml water overnight
  • 2 dates, pitted
  • ¼ tsp vanilla powder, paste or seeds from a pod
  • Pinch of kelp powder (optional)
  • 120ml water

Instructions

Soak the oats in 120ml of water overnight – the oats will absorb all the water. Add all the ingredients to a high-powered blender. Blend until a smooth milk is formed. Add more water for a thinner milk if preferred.

Variations

For a banana, cacao and oat smoothie, add one peeled ripe banana and one teaspoon of cacao powder or nibs to the ingredients and blend as above. (Makes 390ml)

For a chicory and oat milk, add one to two teaspoons of chicory powder before blending all the ingredients together as above. This gives the oat milk a coffee-like flavour. (Makes 300ml)

To make any of the above into chia bowls, soak 15g of chia seeds in 60ml of water overnight. Add the chia seeds, including the water they were soaked in, to the milk or smoothie and stir well to remove any clumps.
